The drought has the open ground vegetable trade in its grasp. "There is some water from time to time, but the situation is dire for some crops. I don't know how this will end," says Michael Olij of the Dutch office of Moorhouse & Mohan in a market review for the various open ground vegetables.
Price increase
The broccoli and cauliflower market had an excess for a long time. 'Now the export of broccoli to the United Kingdom is starting a bit. It's not wild yet, but the price has risen from 45 to 75 cents. The sales of cauliflower just doesn't seem to want to start. 45 to 55 cents is being paid for both the 'sixes' and the 'eights'. I do expect the prices to go up a bit more if the weather remains this dry," says Michael.
"The new carrots - rough C - have good prices, with a level around 45-47 cents. More is gradually entering the market, which means the price will drop back a little over the next few weeks. The old white cabbage has almost all been sold. The farmers that held the cabbage back the longest are being rewarded for it this year with a price level of 50-60 cents. The market for ice berg lettuce has been disappointing for a while The current price level is around 2.30 Euro and still hasn't been above 4 Euro."
