Jacco Munter, Verskoop:

"Mussel vegetables selling like hotcakes"

At fruit and vegetable catering wholesaler Verskoop from Heinkenzand the peak season has burst loose. "As of next weekend everything on the Zeeuwse coast will be full and we'll be running at full steam," says Jacco Munter. "We're hoping for sunny weather. Last week we had a great week, with Saturday as the best day, but we've been feeling the effects of the rainy Sunday until now."

Selling like hotcakes
One of Verskoop's specialities are the well known mussel vegetables. "They sell like hotcakes in this period. The season started very well and we are producing them 15 hours per day at the moment," says Jacco. Verskoop supplies the mussel vegetables in twelve recipes of which celery, carrot, onions and leek are the most important. "One customer will want 80% onions and the next 30%. On the Belgian and French market they use a lot of celery."

Focus on Zeeuwse market
"A lot of catering customers used to cut the mussel vegetables themselves, but you can see this decreasing. We also supply a lot of vegetables straight to the mussel suppliers in Yerseke, who sell them along with the mussels. We also foresee some fish shops with them. Our focus is on the Zeeuwse market and we have no plans to change this," says Jacco.

Another popular product in Verskoop's assortment are the ready made salads. "We have seen this demand increase hugely. There used to be five cooks in the kitchen and now there's two at most. There is hardly any difference in freshness because we produce them at night and deliver in the morning. Three years ago we only had three salads and now we offer fifteen different kinds, and we expect this development to continue," concludes Jacco.
