Though unfavorable weather during the winter led to light volumes during the first part of the peach season in the South, volumes have picked up in recent weeks. Combined, production from the early part of the season and recent production has leveled out volumes for the season.“There was some frost in the off-season that made for a lighter-than-normal early part of the season,” said Kevin Rogers of Richter Produce. “But from late-June onward, production got as close to typical as you can get.” The peach season in South Carolina and neighboring regions runs from about mid-May through September, and barring any unforeseen events, volumes are expected to last into September this year.
While consumption of peaches, as with many fruit items, has increased over the years, current demand is moderate. On July 15, prices for a carton of yellow peaches out of Central Georgia and South Carolina were between $13.85 and $16.85, with most prices falling between $14.85 and 15.85.
“The market is good and stable,” said Rogers. “There are always challenges, but there's been nothing out of the ordinary. We've had a favorable quality season this year.”
