Italy: High-tech haystack for storage of Montoro onions

A high-tech haystack, a structure which, according to its developers, will present the evolution of produce storing, was presented during Montoroexpo, an event supported by the Avellino Chamber of Commerce held at the Expo on July 7th.

The idea was conceived by Agostino Giaquinto, Nicola Barbato and Claudio D'Onofrio, who then transformed it into a project that will be developed thanks to Gaia and Suprema companies. For what concerns Montoro onions, Suprema designed an eco-friendly storing structure that can exploit the wind and control humidity.

Nicola Barbato told FreshPlaza that "the concept is simple, we looked at the past, at how or grandparents used to store onions. Haystacks were built according to certain rules, so we asked ourselves whether it was possible to save energy while storing onions. People nowadays use cold-storage chambers, but the costs are high."

"This structure is made up of steel and can be disassembled. It is painted using pigments developed by the Università di Fisciano extracted from Mediterranean plants, including red onions."

This haystack will have to be well oriented and have opening plates for the correct ventilation. It will also be equipped with a weather station and a modern photovoltaic system. "In addition, it will use geothermal energy. We are using these new technologies to recover traditional cultivation methods with an eye to eco-friendliness and environmental sustainability."

Around 5,000 onions, 800 Podolica, Montoro caramelised onion and pecorino fondue hamburgers, 450 babaonion and 40 kg of fried onions were distributed on 7th July at the Expo.

Babaonions (in the photo below) are made with onion water, pecorino cheese custard, confit cherry tomatoes, basil and anchovies from Cetara.
