The leek market is fairly balanced at the moment, "Last year the prices fell quite quickly, but the market price has been stable for a while around 50 cents per kilo. Demand is reasonably good, not especially high, but the same goes for supply as well," says Peter Wijnen, who is responsible for leek sales at Frankort & Koning. "In Belgium leek prices rose above one Euro per kilo on Thursday, but that had to do with shortages in the local retail sector. This kind of price is not reached on the export markets."
"Leek sales are usually slower during the summer vacation, but I get the impression that due to the disappointing returns in recent years, less leeks will be on the market; which means we will not have too much supply and the market will not get flooded," continues Peter. "Starting last week a few markets fell out because they are self-sufficient with the local product. Our biggest competition comes from Germany and France right now. Production in Belgium is disappointing."
"The quality of the leek itself is good, but the product has problems left and right and the growers have to act fast to stay ahead, but the problems are resolved quickly," says Peter. Frankort markets leeks, both under a private label and under their own brand Royal Verde. "We are seeing more and more customers throughout Europe tell us their wishes. They want to be assured that they will have access to leeks year round, in the right packaging and with the right specifications."
