US (OH): Tight market for radishes

Rains in Ohio and Michigan have disrupted radish production there and made for light volumes. But because of the quick turnaround on the radish crop, volumes could improve later this month.

“There were heavy rains in Michigan around the middle of June, and then in Ohio we got some rain about a week after that,” said Jeff Walker of TC Marketing. “Any time you get excessive rain, and we got several inches, it's going to put a damper on things. So volumes are low and the market is very tight right now because of the rain.” Walker added that he's seen F.O.B. prices around $11.00 per carton, which is above average. But the market could improve in the coming weeks.

“The good thing is that we can get a crop every 30 days with radishes,” said Walker. “Western Michigan should come back into supply by the end of next week, and then Ohio should follow about a week later. Anything can happen, and it all depends on the weather, but the market could improve again by the last week of July.”
