Citrus campaign has positive and negative extremes

The Regulatory Board of Protected Geographical Indication Valencian Citrus has assessed this citrus campaign season in Valencia, noting that results had been irregular for oranges, but positive for lime and tangerine.

The Managing Director of PGI Valencian Citrus, José Enrique Sanz, stated that the "citrus sector in general can not speak of a successful campaign, as the results for oranges have not been satisfactory, while better for tangerines."

"Regarding oranges, the campaign began with good prices for the navelina variety, which matured in stages so prices remained until the last week of November, when an oversupply became noticeable. As for the late orange varieties, the navel lane late had a good quality and acceptable prices. Later varieties, such as the navel powell, Chislett or Barnfield, had a really good campaign, both in quality and price, as there was a drop in quality and production in other citrus-growing areas of Spain."

"Tangerine prices have also been acceptable, the problem has been in the field, as the continuous rains in late November resulted in many losses of clementines, as many kilos had to stay in the fields. The campaign was good for late tangerines, except for the ortanique variety."

In addition, José Enrique Sanz also stated that it had been an important campaign for the PGI Valencian Citrus. Earlier this year, two major retail chains, Carrefour and Eroski, incorporated citrus certified by our PGI to their lines: in the case of Eroski, throughout the national territory via its Natur brand, and in the case of Carrefour in France, in the area of Normandy and Brittany with organic citrus. It's also worth noting that Alcampo continues packaging PGI Valencian Citrus at the national level, as it has done in recent seasons. Additionally, the Regulatory Council has regained its presence stand of Fruit Attraction 2014 and Fruit Logistica 2015.
