Portable CA test facility for fruit and veg

Besseling Group has built a portable, comprehensive CA test facility, commissioned by one of their Romanian distributors. The modular units will soon be transported to Romania where the system will be put into operation at a leading fruit and vegetable research institute. The research institute wants to use the system to further extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables (without spoilage).

The test facility is made up of 12 1m³ CA refrigerated cells in which the storage period of fruit and vegetables can be simulated and improved. In addition to temperature and humidity, different atmospheric conditions can be created in each cell, independent of the other cells. At the request of the client, an ethylene converter was installed in all the CA cells so that the period of storage for ethylene-sensitive products, like kiwis, could be tested. Each CA cell has it's own settings for:

  • Temperature
  • Humidity (Ultrasonic)
  • Oxygen
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Ethylene

The Fruit Observer system, that was designed by the Besseling Group, can be easily integrated in the future. With this system, the institute can also test the shelf life of fruits and vegetables at very low oxygen concentrations (DCA).
