Mexico: Chihuahua largest producer of onion

Thanks to their production and quality, the state of Chihuahua has positioned itself as the number one producer of onions in Mexico with a production of over 110,508 tons in 2014.

The Department of Agriculture stated that the cultivation of onions has risen in the state in recent years. Expectations are that, in 2015, production will increase to 181,204 tons, and the productive area will amount to 3,720 acres.

Onion production represents an economic growth opportunity for hundreds of families engaged in this activity in the state, as most of the onion production from Chihuahua is exported to the United States and the rest is sold in the Mexican territory because of their product’s quality.

The Secretary of Rural Development, Leonel De la Rosa Carrera, said onions were a very important crop in terms of job creation because the planting of early varieties started in early November, the intermediate onions were planted in January, and the late varieties in February or March, and the harvest took place between May and October.

"The socio-economic impact of this production in the state of Chihuahua is approximately 150 jobs per hectare, which has meant a significant source of employment in rural areas, as it generates around 558,000 jobs," said the state official.
