Germany: Peaches in greater demand than pears

For years the consumption of peaches has been constant in Germany. Germans eat around 3.6 kg peaches per year per person. Spain works on its status of the most important supplier: 76.2 percent of yellow and white-fleshed peaches in Germany come from Spain.

With a total export volume of approximately 76,000 metric tons in 2014 (2013: 67,067 metric tons) Spain is ahead of Italy, which is the second most important supplier in 2014 with about 26,000 metric tons of peaches to Germany (2013: 39,910 metric tons).

Demand for peaches hardly fluctuates. The average consumption is, according to calculations by the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE), 3.6 kilograms per person. In the marketing year 2013/2014, the Germans bought a total of 299,000 metric tons of peaches. By comparison, the consumption of pears was in this period 201,000 metric tons and 2.4 kilograms per person.

Prices drop, supply increased
In week 24 the average price on the German wholesale markets for a kilogram of peaches was between 2.11 Euro for yellow-fleshed peaches from Italy and 2.27 Euro for white-fleshed peaches from Spain. Yellow-fleshed peaches from Spain were sold for a price of 2.17 per kilogram. The price of yellow peaches is higher than the previous year (1.92 to 1.99 Euro), however the price of white peaches is lower (2.47 Euro).
