Argentina: Leafy veg gaining ground in Rio de la Plata

More than a decade ago, the tomatoes and pepper plantations prevailed in the agricultural lands of la Plata, mainly in the area of Olmos, Etcheverry and Abasto. However, this started to change over the years and the incorporation of Bolivian immigrants who have exponentially been growing leafy vegetables, different species of lettuce, arugula and chard, as well as cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, watercress, turnips and radishes).

Lettuce crops occupy a large amount of land area devoted to agriculture, such as in the area of Olmos

Leafy vegetable crops and cruciferous increased so much that the directors of the Association of Horticultural Producers in the region have stated that they represent 85% of all the vegetables planted and harvested in the region, and that the remaining 15% of the vegetable production was of pepper (bell) and tomatoes, which are still produced by old producers, most of them descendants of Italian immigrants.

"There are leafy vegetables throughout the whole year and there is enough to be self-sufficient in the region and to send output to other cities," farmers from the region said, adding that "the progress that has been made in cultivation techniques and the incorporation of technology and appropriate tools have helped a lot to improve and increase production. It is, without doubt, the one that has evolved the most in our area."

There is also an important 6,000 hectares production of green onions and beet in the area.
