US (CA): Avocado Commission celebrates June as avocado month

To coincide with the time of year when California hits peak avocado production, the California Avocado Commission is celebrating June as California Avocado Month. The commission is running several promotions to mark the event, including partnering with chefs to spread recipes and education about avocados.

“California Avocado Month is a celebration of the versatility of California avocados and the peak California avocado season,” said Jan Delyser of the California Avocado Commission. “June is the kick-off for the summer season, and the timing offers retailers a theme to promote between major retail events such as Memorial Day in May and USA’s Independence Day in July.” Promotions during the month include 30 sandwich recipes in 30 days at The Scoop blog, avocado-centric recipes from artisan chefs like Trey Foshee of Georges at the Cove in San Diego, and demonstrations and in-store events put on by retailers.

“California Avocado Month provides the opportunity for retailers and influencers to talk about California Avocado season and the start of summer,” said Delyser. “Consumption has been on a steady rise for the last decade. This is attributed to increased distribution, marketing, great nutrition news and more consumers trying avocados in new applications throughout the day.” Production this year is expected to be similar to that from last year's, with the current forecast at 283 million pounds. Harvesting will continue strong through the beginning of July and will taper off throughout the summer months.
