Walter Gubbels:

"Good demand for asparagus, but exceptionally few kilos"

The Dutch asparagus season is coming to an end. "There is nothing wrong with the demand or the quality, only had there been more kilos picked,"concluded Greenery grower Walter Gubbels from Helvoirt. "The heated season went very well. But then the open ground production should have got going, but the kilos were lacking due to the cold spring. And it is said that kilos are still at a lower level."

"The prices were at regular levels for a long time, but pulled up a week or two ago. The price of a white double A asparagus is around 4 Euro and the green are above 5 Euro," says Walter. "Especially the supermarkets banked on asparagus this year and jumped on deals when there was a larger supply. The area was larger this year, but as almost all asparagus in the Netherlands are consumed, the consumption will also be higher this year. This offers a lot of perspective. Asparagus used to be a speciality, but they have now become commonplace for all consumers."

"The quality is mentioned by everyone, but this coincides. If there is a period of warm weather, the price drops out and the quality decreases. So in this aspect the situation isn't that bad. We kind of foresaw lower productions. Last year a lot of asparagus was picked, and followed by a cold spring there just hadn't been enough growth. A lot of growers are considering continuing harvesting, but I personally think that that's not where most profit can be made. That really taxes the plant."
