Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Germany

More tomatoes and cucumbers under plastic - less asparagus

Vegetable farming under glass and plastic is a growing business for vegetable farmers in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - albeit still at a low level. The State Statistical Office announced on Friday in the capital Schwerin that last year the acreage expanded by 24 percent to 16.8 hectares.

In 25 companies 2437 metric tons of greenhouse vegetables were harvested 45 percent more than in 2013. Among it were 1516 metric tons of tomatoes and 651 metric tons of cucumbers. And last year 1787 acres of vegetables were farmed, which is slightly less than in 2013. Mostly lettuce was produced, on 37 percent of the acreage. And against the national trends the asparagus cultivation decreased by twelve percent to 243 acres.
