South Africa: Young plant grower starts production in triple layer retractable
The retractable roof covering allows crops to be exposed to direct sunlight and lower humidity when outside conditions are ideal, but the roof can be closed in minutes to protect the plants from rain, hail, cold and heat. Below the upper greenhouse roof is a second retractable roof using clear fabric which also functions as a greenhouse roof during the cold winter days while providing additional diffusion during the sunny days of summer.
To ensure that sensitive young plants can be produced free of insects, the lowest retractable layer is made using insect net.
This large horizontal layer of net allows plants to receive some direct ultra violet and infra red radiation through the net to grow a hardier young plant and the large surface area of net minimizes the trapping of heat and humidity inside the greenhouse. To help manage the extreme heat and radiation during the summer, the roof and second layer can be closed partway to block the radiation while still allowing massive ventilation.
Plant growth is uniform and plants are strong, hardy and disease free, since the large horizontal openings in the roof help optimize light levels and guarantees uniform conditions regardless of wind speed or wind direction.
All of the perimeter walls have roll up curtains which are permanently screened to allow for additional ventilation while keeping out pests. Leveling of adjacent land has already started in preparation for the next expansion.
