Spain imported 27% more bananas in March

In March 2015, the Canary Islands shipped 36,100 tonnes to the domestic market, while the country imported 18,800 tonnes and re-exported 6,300 tonnes. Consumers consequently had access to 48,600 tonnes of bananas, which is 10,365 tonnes more than in the previous month (+27%). With these figures, the market share of imported bananas has fluctuated between a minimum of 26% and a maximum of 39%.

Spain's main banana suppliers in March were Costa Rica, with 4,667 tonnes; Cameroon, with 4,072 tonnes; Ivory Coast with 2,991 and Colombia with 2,822 tonnes. These four suppliers accounted for 77% of the total volume. Moreover, Cameroon, with 4.1 million Euro, Ivory Coast, with 3.1 million, Costa Rica with 2.4 and Colombia with 1.6 million Euro were the main suppliers in terms of value, accounting for more than 82% of the total.
