The regions of the North of the country where these actions will take place are Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad and San Martin.
The head of Minagri spoke from the province of Sechura, located in the Piura region, and said that they had destined an additional 55 million soles this year to carry forward these activities, which involved the desilting of rivers, cleaning of drains, coastal defence and other measures that are intended to deal with the rising of the waters in the event of an intensification of rains.
As an example, he said, 62 emergency activities were scheduled in Piura alone with a 8.5 million soles budget and they were carried out in the area of the Chira River, high, medium, and low Piura. 60 of these activities were concluded and only two are still being executed and according to plans they will be finished by the end of June.
The first activity is the cleaning of drain 13.08, which is 57 kilometres long, and which has had 38 km cleaned already; an activity that will benefit 5,000 families and 6,000 hectares of rice and corn.
The second activity consists of the cleaning of the Sechura drain, which is 67.41 kilometres long, 32 of which have already been cleaned. This work will benefit 8,000 families and 10,000 hectares of rice, corn and cotton crops.
"As part of the prevention policy that began last year, the Minagri and sector agencies are working intensely to speed up the works in order to be able to face an eventual increase of the flow of waters due to a greater rainfall and to eliminate the surplus water to avoid damage to the population and to public and private property," Benites said.
The Minister also said that in 2014 the agrarian sector had invested 70 million soles in prevention activities (desilting of rivers and cleaning of drains). These works had benefited the population of Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, and La Libertad, as well as preventing new floods this year.
