Discounter Hofer wants to bypass the fruit traders with asparagus

This year’s asparagus season, the discounter company Hofer (Aldi) has bespoken a new trend in purchasing in Austria. Hofer is clearly betting on large producer companies, which can deliver directly to the trading concern, thus bypassing the fruit traders.

Nevertheless, in the asparagus season so far, producer prices are about 20% higher than in an average year. In growing area Eferding, the asparagus was exceptionally cheap, as measured by the above average quality of 2014. Therefore the higher prices of 2015 are also seen as a normalization. In the future, deliveries to chain stores will have central importance in Austria.
