Greece: Garlic guarantees a very stable market

The company Mirtsidis, founded in 1970 and established in a traditional garlic production area of northern Greece, is specialised in the production, packaging and marketing of garlic. Owner Konstantinos Mirtsidis affirms that “We have a 2.5 thousand square metre warehouse, as well as cold storage and drying facilities.”

“90% of our Global G.A.P. certified production (1,000 tonnes per year), marketed under the Martsidis brand, is intended for Greece, where it is distributed by large retailers, including Alfa-Beta Vassilopoulos (under Delhaize Group from Belgium) and Masoutis, as well as three wholesale companies. We also export to destinations like Bulgaria or Hungary, taking advantage of our warehouse’s close location to the Bulgarian border,” says Marsidis.

He explains that garlic is highly popular in Greece, as it is an essential part of the country’s gastronomy. “It usually has a stable price, currently of 2.5 Euro per kilo, which is good for both the producer and the client. Demand continues to grow, and this is mostly due to quality.”

When it comes to production, Mirtsidis cultivates the California Late, which is the most common in Greece. They also grow small quantities of Chinese seeds. “The main secret to cover client demands such as retailers, is to keep the quality stable by storing the product under ideal humidity and temperature conditions, as well as not using any illegal pesticides.”

Another important aspect to preserve quality is that the garlic is not stored for too long, even if prices are low, despite the difficult economic situation. He believes that it will still take another 4-5 years to improve, is optimistic about the future of the company, since “Despite competition from countries like China, Argentina or Spain, garlic ensures a more stable market than most other products.”
