Italy: Stroppiana Ortofrutticoli and Agrocompany

Stroppiana Ortofrutticoli and Agrocompany are two companies that supply fruit and vegetables to the catering industry. In 2014, their turnover was of €13 and €5 million respectively.

Stroppiana Ortofrutticoli has been operating for three generations and, in 1996, it opened Agrocompany, specialised in the fresh-cut range.

Franco Stroppiana, legal representative and chairman of Agrocompany, explained that "Agrocompany was born because in 1994 FIAT asked us if we could supply them with ready-to-eat fruit and vegetables. That's how we started."

Davide Diverio, sales manager for Stroppiana, says that "40% of the produce we distribute in the North-West comes from Italian producers and the rest comes from other suppliers. In addition, the Società Cooperativa Agricola delle Alpi PO was established in 2004 and it supplies us with local products."

Stroppiana Ortofrutticoli delivers packed unwashed produce to caterers and school canteens in addition to retailers close by and a few shops and market stalls.

"The fact that we combine packed unwashed and fresh-cut products offers the chance to small merchants to have some fresh-cut products too. In addition, the fact that we work with local produce has proven to be a winning choice."

"Agrocompany has 4 processing lines in two facilities for leaf vegetables, other vegetables potatoes and fruit (strawberries, kiwis, pineapples, sliced and diced apples, sliced and diced melons, fresh-fruit salad and grapes)."

"For what concerns vegetables, we process spinach, chicory, fennel (sliced, julienned, diced and cut into wedges), peppers (diced, julienned and quartered), cabbage, broccoli, mushrooms, aubergines, tomatoes, courgettes, pumpkin, carrots, leek, celery, celeriac, onions (sliced and diced), and potatoes (sliced, diced, whole and cut into wedges). It is precisely our vast assortment of products that enables us to be competitive."

"Until ten years ago, we supplied thousands of meals to FIAT, barracks and schools every day. Then, the car industry crisis led to 6-hour work shifts with no lunch break and restaurant vouchers were introduced. Nowadays we only cater to school canteens in Piedmont, Valle d'Aosta, Liguria and Lombardy."

"The change in consumption changed our clients too - we do have less catering clients but we are supplying more to restaurants."
