estimate 80,000 tonnes

Spain expects less cherries this year

The average Spanish cherry production of 2009 to 2014 was around 95,000 tonnes per year. This is the volume for sweet and sour cherries combined. This was said by Carlos Maris Gil Garcia of Agro21. A total production of around 80,000 tonnes is expected for this season, despite an increase in the productive areas in previous years.

He says: "Due to circumstances and accumulation during the autumn, less production is expected in the areas where there was a higher production last year. Besides this, frost in the spring influenced a lot of orchards for certain varieties. Besides this there were rainy periods during the blossoming period."
