"Today top, tomorrow flop!"

German strawberries: good quality and high prices

Germany has had a good start to the strawberry season. The mild winter has resulted in sporadic frost damage to German strawberry plants. Many producers are hoping now for a good season. At the Düsseldorf wholesale market the strawberry season is in full swing. Roland Tolls, of the Berger & Tolls GmbH & Co. KG is very satisfied with the German strawberries: "The quality of German strawberries is great! I would advise everyone who can spare the money to buy German strawberries "

No worries with German strawberries
Roland Tolls gets his strawberries exclusively from German cultivation: "We currently only purchase strawberries from local producers. Our farmers in the Lower Rhine supply us daily with fresh produce." Talking about import strawberries for example from Spain or Italy, the wholesaler is reluctant. "When importing goods you have to be careful. Although the Italian strawberries look good too, they can go off quickly; today top, tomorrow flop. To keep my clients and myself from worrying, I’d rather sell better quality strawberries from German farms." Another reason to choose the German strawberries is the visual aspect. Roland Tolls explains: "The German strawberries look very nice. Especially compared to strawberries from Spain or Italy. For me there is no reason to hesitate. "

Mother's Day ensures rising prices

The price of the strawberries is going up again towards the weekend. "We were at 1.70 to 1.80 Euro per clamshell," says Roland Tolls, "Today we have started at prices around 2.70 Euro." The rainy weather of recent days and the upcoming Mother's Day weekend are, according to Tolls, the reason for the rapid rise in prices. "Mother's Day caused the strawberry prices to increase again," says the wholesaler, "And perhaps so much that some consumers will consider the cheaper Italian products. But if you do that it remains to be seen if you get value for money." Roland Tolls can not complain about the turnover: "The demand for strawberries was high enough that we were able to sell all our strawberries this week."

Next week: Falling Prices
Roland Tolls expects falling prices again in the coming week: "At the beginning of the week the weather will be warmer. So I reckon that then midweek prices will be back at 1.50 to 1.70 Euro per clamshell."
