Spain: Fruit and veg sector outlines structural and economic difficulties

Professional agricultural organisations, Cooperativas Agroalimentarias and FEPEX have held a meeting with the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Isabel GarcĂa Tejerina, to outline the serious structural and economic difficulties affecting the fruit and vegetable sector in Spain, which should be addressed with appropriate measures.

The main causes leading to this crisis in the sector are the breach of the partnership agreements with certain countries, notably Morocco, which has resulted in a strong pressure on prices and increased production costs, the difficulties caused by the Russian veto, the growing nationalisation of European markets and the failure of crisis management measures.

According to the organisations taking part in the meeting, the fruit and vegetable sector currently stands below the threshold of profitability, which means that the economic viability of farms is being questioned and appropriate public actions are required.
