Mexico: Chiapas sends first shipment of greenhouse tomatoes to US

As part of the Chiapas Exporter program of the Agro-industrial Chiapas Group (Grachi), Chiapas exported its first shipment of high quality tomatoes to the United States.

The shipment was done from the town of Nuevo Progreso, municipality of La Trinitaria, and was witnessed by the governor, Manuel Velasco Coello, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Development (SEDESOL), Ernesto Nemer Alvarez, and the president of the Grachi Group president, José López Calvo Delmar. The greenhouse tomatoes produced in Chiapas are bound for the city of McAllen, Texas, USA.

Chiapas grows about 1.5 million hectares and harvests more than 12 million tons of agricultural products.

In this event, which was also attended by the Director General of the Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade, Investment and Technology, Jorge Lopez Morton, there was a recognition of the efforts and commitment that the Grachi group has regarding the rural development of Chiapas, as it is the first company that has exported this product and demonstrates that the state has talent, dedication and an organized work that favours the productive sector.

According to the Secretariat of the Fields, the state cultivates about 1.5 million hectares and harvests more than 12 million tons of agricultural products that are marketed in Mexico and around the world. Chiapas ranks first worldwide in the production of organic products, as a result of the coordinated work between the government and producers.

The president of Comce Sinaloa and of the Committee for Research and Defence of Vegetables of the Confederation of Agricultural Associations of Sinaloa, Rosario Antonio Beltran Ureta, said that Chiapas Exporter would undoubtedly be an example to follow for businesses and producers from Chiapas. The program is showing them the path they have to follow to get ready to export more and to take advantage of the factors that give them a competitive edge, in order to consolidate the state's export potential.
