Spain: High prices and good quality for first cherries

"Yesterday we made the first shipments of early cherries of the Early Bigi variety to Switzerland and France at very high prices," said the exporter Manuel Navarro Rubio, manager of the company Namifruits, of Fraga, Aragon.

"We are among the first to start harvesting and cherry supply volumes are currently very small; thus, with high demand and almost zero supply, initial prices are quite high," said the exporter.

While stating that his plantations have not been affected by problems during the flowering, Manual Navarro affirms that, overall, small volumes are expected in the area during May.

The exporter also highlights the high quality of the fruit at the start of the season. "At the moment we have no problems with cracking and the fruit we are harvesting is very homogeneous, very appealing to the eye. We have great prospects for this cherry campaign.

Namifruits is a family business based in Fraga which produces about 1,500 tonnes of fresh fruit, including cherries, nectarines, peaches, flat peaches, nectarines, pears and apricots.

This year, to continue adding value to its products, the firm had added QR codes to its cherry containers to ensure maximum traceability, with plenty more information on the label, from the plantation's location and date of harvesting to information about the entire production and handling process.
