US (FL): Transition brings tight green bean market

As production of green beans in Florida transitions north, supplies have been tight this week. With alternating rainy and hot conditions, supplies have been further constrained by interruptions to harvesting.

“The last four or five days, there was a lot of rain,” said Tom Nicholson of Ben-Bud Growers. “So anybody who had small amounts, they either abandoned the fields or can't pick any longer.” Production in Homestead, Florida was winding down before the rains, but the weather put a stop to any production that was left. There will still be picking in Plant City through mid-May, but production will continue to move north, into Georgia, in the coming weeks.

“There's a temporary tightness in the market,” said Nicholson. He noted that prices for a carton of green beans were between $8.00 and $12.00 earlier this month, but with supplies light, prices have recently hovered near $20.00 a carton.

“The market will stay strong for about a week,” said Nicholson, “and then it should weaken when there are more beans from Georgia.”
