Prices and production volumes falling behind

Difficult situation in aubergine market

The aubergine market is currently in a difficult situation. The results achieved during the first 4 months of the year by Dutch aubergine growers have actually been worse than those of 2014's record-breaking poor season start. Both production volumes and prices per kilo are at a lower level than last year, reports A8.

In the first quarter of the year, the bad market situation in Spain has clearly taken a toll on the overall situation in the Netherlands. Growing conditions in Spain have been good in recent months, leading to high volumes and low prices in the Netherlands. Additionally, poor market results are also attributable to the Russian boycott.

The large volumes which used to be exported in spring from the Netherlands to Russia account for a great loss and there are thus concerns for the months of May and June. Nevertheless, the season is still long and growers hope for things to go as in 2014, when the summer somewhat compensated for the season's bad start.
