Spain: Hashish hidden in oranges

The Spanish Guardia Civil reported the arrest this week of three people suspected of drug trafficking as a result of three actions carried out in the port of Melilla in recent weeks, which resulted in the seize of a total of 30 kilos of hashish, 2 of which were hidden inside large oranges. A passenger, who was carrying the fruit in a bag, was arrested in the control area of Melilla's port, while the two others were arrested while trying to board the ships that link Melilla with the Peninsula. In these cases, the drug was hidden inside air conditioning systems.

In the case of passenger carrying fruit with hashish inside, the guards were examining the luggage with a scanner that detected "a certain anomaly" in the bag. Inside, the police officers found six oranges with a total of 263 hashish acorns weighing two kilos. To do this, the inside of the oranges had been emptied, leaving only the outer layer of skin, and the fruit was then filled with the drug and stuck with tape. The owner of the luggage is a 52 year old Moroccan national residing in the province of Murcia.

With these actions, the Guardia Civil has prevented the distribution and marketing on the illicit market of more than 160,000 doses of hashish.
