Making food and eating it

Versatile pavilion at World Expo Milan

An open stand in the form of a festival, a restaurant on a carousel, food trucks with names like the Flying Dutchmen and the 'Filostoof'...The Dutch contribution to the 2015 World Expo in Milan promises to be a spectacular affair. In the Holland pavilion Dutch company life will be presented under the theme 'Share, Grow, Live' in a playful yet informative manner. This theme fits in with the World Expo theme which is 'Feeding the planet, energy for life'. The nine food trucks left Rotterdam today as a rolling harbinger that will be seen starting May 1st at World Expo.

The Dutch contribution to the world exhibition in Milan can certainly be called unique. The Dutch contribution is the only open pavilion at the World Expo and is therefore accessible from all sides. This means there will be no queues at the entrance. The design is inspired by summer festivals and the pavilion will have a festival-like atmosphere. A touch of Dutch humour, combined with a serious message, because as forerunner in the area of agriculture and trade, the Netherlands offers visitors an unparalleled informative program. The pavilion expects 15,000 visitors daily.

Growing plants on Mars
The Netherlands is a pioneer in the field of innovative agriculture and global trade. To name a few examples of advanced agricultural projects: an oyster reef that also serves as dike reinforcement. Power food for cancer patients. Combining tomato and fish agriculture to make optimum use of heat and space. A new biological technology that can turn polluted and salty water into safe drinking water. Genetically modified plants that are more resistant to climate change, growing plants on Mars and soft drink bottles made from sugarcane. This is just a small sample of the wide range of information that will be available at the Dutch pavilion.

Food trucks with a story
The theme of food at the Milan World Expo requires that good food be available of course. In festival style, nine different food trucks will be parked where visitors can taste typical Dutch street food. Dishes such as pot roast, pancakes, sausage rolls, organic fries and the Dutch Weed burger, a hamburger made from sustainably farmed seaweed, will be available. There is even a story behind the snacks. Beside the rolling kitchens there is also the opportunity to take a seat at the revolving tables at La Molina, a Ferris wheel that has been transformed into a restaurant. In a big glass area called The Greenhouse, visitors can experience 'shared dining'. This large glass greenhouse, equipped with a roof terrace, is a nod to Dutch horticulture and multi-functionality. There will be a daily menu served here that will combine the Italian and Dutch kitchens. The space can also be used for business events such as corporate presentations, client days or a food related fair. The Dutch pavilion will be exciting not only on an intellectual level, but it will also speak to our appetites.

General Information
The World Expo is held once every five years and this year it will take place in Milan. The theme for the 34th world expo is 'Feeding the planet, energy for life'. This covers technology, innovation, culture, traditions and creativity, and how these elements relate to food and diets. Expo 2015 will handle previous year's themes in a new light looking at new global situations with a focus on the right to healthy, safe, sufficient food for all citizens of the world. The World Expo Milan 2015 organization leads the Dutch exhibit in the right direction.
