Mexico: Radish and green tomato prices increase

This week the field products that had the highest increase in prices were the radish, which increased from $5 to $12 pesos, green tomatoes, which went from $12 to $15 pesos, and papaya, which increased from $5 to $9 pesos per kilo.

Other product that had price increases were avocado, pink potatoes, plum, and zapote mamey, which increased by $2 pesos per kilo each.

The owners of the shops in the Revolution market stated that the prices of fruits and vegetables were always variable because they depended on several factors, such as weather conditions, the product's season, or if there were shortages of a specific product.

From April 5 to 19, 30 products were surveyed; the price of 19 decreased and the price of 11 increased. Grape prices fell from $50 to $42 pesos; Pineapple, from $25 to $20 per unit, and the poblano chilli went from $24 to $19 pesos.

Housewives were also benefited by the price reduction of the tomato. Last week tomato prices had the highest increase ($15 pesos), and now they are being sold at $10 per kilo.

"I am buying four kilos for the entire week because the price could suddenly increase, so now I can store it in the refrigerator so it doesn't spoil," said Jovita Lopez, who regularly buys one to two pounds of tomatoes per week.

The price of chilli peppers also decreased by more than 50 percent when compared to the price it had two weeks ago, as it fell from $17 to $6.5 pesos; Onion prices decreased from $10 to $6.50, and melon prices went from $20 to $12 pesos per unit.
