Spanish Galia melons competing with Egypt, Morocco and Senegal

Galia melons grown in Almeria's greenhouses are starting to reach the markets, where they will have to compete with those from Egypt, Morocco and Senegal, according to information obtained by Hortoinfo via the Prices and Markets Observatory of Andalusia.

Although the volumes reaching the auctions are still small, the melons from Almeria and the countries mentioned have the mission to replace those from Costa Rica, Brazil, Honduras and Panama, which had been the ones imported so far by the European Union (EU).

Regarding watermelons, the other summer fruit par excellence, adverse weather conditions in March and early April, with many cloudy and even rainy days, are delaying the start of the campaign, even though in many cases the plantings were carried out earlier compared to previous campaigns.
