EU: New imported potatoes meeting a need

The Spanish potato season started this morning at Verdi Import with the first
Doré's from the Guadalquivir delta. "Spain planted far fewer potatoes this year, and they had to contend with poor weather conditions at the beginning of cultivation. We anticipated this by milling the potatoes a bit more. This provides a qualitatively better product," says Mark Verweij.

"With the nice weather in the Netherlands comes a decreased interest in working with old potatoes. The potatoes are decaying quicker than in other seasons due to the relatively warm weather. The profit margin for the old crop potatoes is not good. But the supply of new potatoes is limited. Not only did Spain plant less this year but Cyprus and Malta suffered from frost," continues Verweij. "Overall, good marketing and well led cultivation is required in order to offer an optimal product the entire season long."

Verdi also has Alpha potatoes from Malta and Moroccan Nicola potatoes available. "The Moroccan Nicola potato is big for us, and is mainly sold in Poland and other Eastern European countries."
