Angelo Benedetti (Unitec)

Italy: Technology helps achieving a better quality

Angelo Benedetti (in the photo below), chairman of Unitec, talked about his company at Fruit Innovation, the convention held on April 14th in Milan, and stated that it is possible to improve corporate business on the international market.

Angelo Benedetti's presentation.

The company is among the leaders in the design and manufacturing of machinery and plants for the processing, grading and selection of over 35 types of fruit and vegetables. It went from a turnover of €18 million in 2010 to 68 million in 2014 thanks to an export share of over 95%.

But foreign trade is not something you can improvise, so Unitec developed a network of branches in the main producer countries (France and Spain, all the way to Chile, Argentina, US and South Africa) and a marketing structure that can monitor clients' needs in over 50 countries.

"By accepting the challenges posed by globalisation, it is now possible to work with the market, analysing local habits and situations to meet the needs of different markets and consumers."

"In our case, internationalisation means being capable of supplying high-quality products in line with the preferences of consumers in the different destination markets."

This is where technology becomes a strategic asset - to guarantee "constant quality" and gain the trust of final consumers, which in turn means increased consumption.

"All of this is possible by standardising processing procedures and using innovative technologies for quality selection. Export activities in fact require the capability of selecting high-quality fruit to avoid transport problems, as they would compromise consumption and affect the company image."

"For example, the selection of soft fruit enables us to eliminate overripe produce. The packing station can thus plan differentiated export strategies according to the various ripening stages."

It is therefore important to be effective and highly-productive while at the same time supplying a high-quality and guaranteed product. This can be achieved thanks to technologies that standardise selection parameters for products with a consistent high-quality capable of leading to an increased consumption, which in turn means more business for export companies. This theory was also explained at the Fruitimprese National Assembly held in Rome on April 16th, 2015.
