Spain: New Sweet Baby Onions

Thanks to the stabilisation of the Spanish domestic market and the registration of the Sweet Baby Onions brand, everything is ready for the European launch of Cebollas Javaloyes.

Sweet Baby Onions.

"We have managed to develop these unique onions during 10 years of research and experimentations with seed companies and research institutes. The onions are different from any of those available on the market: they are sweet (Brix level 8+, similar to strawberries), with low pyruvic acid content (the one that makes you 'cry'), no cholesterol and with antioxidants. The Vidalia Laboratory Institute from Georgia also certified its anti-cancer properties," explains Anotnio Pagano from Pagano Company, European trader of Sweet Baby Onions.

"By combining new varieties, we managed to have produce available 12 months a year, even in winter, when we usually feel the pressure from Egypt." 200 thousand bunches of Sweet Baby Onions are cultivated every day in Spain on 600 hectares.

In the summer, the produce is grown at 800 metres above sea level, "whereas now production is carried out on 250 hectares in Alicante, where there is no intercropping, so there are no thrip problems and we can limit the use of many chemical treatments and stop them altogether when the produce is half ripe. This way, the produce we obtain is very ecological, almost organic."

In Spain, these onions have been grown and sold for around 4 years and Cebolla Javayoles, the cooperative that produces it "now occupies 25% of the onion domestic market. Now it is time to access the rest of Europe, as sweet onions are a global trend - the entire American market is appreciating them and the UK launched a new red onion variety in February that was very popular."

Packaged sweet onions

Sweet Baby Onions are now available for export in 500 gram trays. The produce is not peeled but cleaned with compressed air. The shelf-life is long: it can stay 7/10 days in the fridge and the leaves do not loose their green colour. It is a product destined for consumers that care about characteristics, origin and nutritional values."
