Alphonso mangos not approved for export

After the European Committee cancelled the import ban on Alphonso mangos in January 20, 2015, importers of the exotic fruit are happy to be able to resume imports, but due incomplete documentation, it has now lead to complications in the export of the goods.

The authorities can’t approve of export
The border control services in India have not yet given an official letter of release for the mangos,” explained Kartik Tagaré, CEO of Baustok UG (Biothal). “Because of that, it is currently impossible to import the goods into the European Union”. According to officials they couldn’t approve the export without a concrete, official letter. “For export of the goods, a report must be submitted. Only when this report has been received, can the officials and authorities approve the export,” Tagaré explains.

Weather conditions not ideal for the harvest
The suppliers of Alphonso Mango are ready for export and shipping,” the importer assures us. Only, the suppliers do not know which prerequisites need to be filled out for export. That is a difficult situation for all involved. “The complications are not the only thing with which the producers and importers of Alphonso are currently struggling. “Weather conditions in India were not ideal for cultivation this year," Tagaré explains. “There was heavier rainfall. Because of that, the Alphonso harvest did not turn out as abundantly as usual.”

Next attempt mid-April
Officially the season for Alphonso mangos runs until the start of June. “It is a shame that we’ve lost half the season already,” said Kartik Tagaré. However, the businessman is confident that he will still be able to import the exotic fruits, “we have not yet completely lost hope for the mangos. We expect to be able to start importing mangos in mid-April. Originally we had thought the first week of March”.
