Limited cucumber supply results in high prices

Due to the current weather conditions, cucumber supply is lagging far behind. This situation has been present for about a week now. There is hardly any production for Spain either. Combined with high demand from large retailers, this causes prices to rise. Yesterday, the auction price even reached 70 cents.

How the market will evolve next, is hard to predict, according to sales organization Kompany. "Supplies are very limited now, but if the weather was favourable, the market could change just like that. Prices are currently high, but money isn't exactly pouring in for the growers; that's because production isn't very high.

"At the moment the cucumber market is very agitated. But the Dutch cucumber acreage has declined quite a bit, so the chances of the market reaching more of an equilibrium, are only increasing," the sales organization concludes optimistically.
