Colombian scientist develops bean resistant to high temperatures
Stephen Beebe, an American scientist, presented a study about the discovery of a new bean resistant to high temperature that was developed in Cali (Colombia) and that can be grown in environments where it was not possible to grow it before.
In an interview with Efe in London, Beebe stated that "even though beans aren’t adapted for warm climates, they are part of the base diet in Latin America and West Africa."
"When we look at the predictions about climate change, we have always worried about drought. Years ago we started thinking about the effects of rising temperatures," Beebe said.
"The beans adaptation is going to be much smaller when the temperature increases three to four degrees, so we can lose up to 50% of the production within half a century," said the scientist.
"When the international centres of the CGIAR were being developed, we looked for enabling environments and a vigorous national program with which we could work, and we found it in Cali," said Beebe.
