Italy: Slow start to asparagus

The start of the asparagus season has been characterised by little produce and low prices.

Almost all production areas are late due to the bad weather, as Sicily was hit by strong rains and there were hailstorms in the Caserta area. Little produce is available and the quality is not good.

Usually, when a product is scarce, prices go up, yet this does not seem to be the case.

In the past few years, the first asparagus on the market were sold at high prices, but this year, prices are lower (but in line with last year).

Green asparagus from Spain are sold at €5-6-7/kg according to quality and grade.

The first white asparagus are starting to arrive from the Veneto, but the availability is still too little.

The rest of the season will depend on the weather.
