Mexico: Chiapas could have avocado plantations soon

The businessmen in the state's Soconusco region conducted feasibility studies to determine the lands vocation of the mountainous area of this polygon, in order to start planting Hass avocado in the second quarter of 2015, as it is one of the most profitable global agribusiness activities.

According to the entrepreneurs, that include Victor Perez Saldaña, the results showed that the soil in at least ten communal lands in the Townships of Cacahoatán, in the Soconusco, were good enough to grow Hass avocados commercially. Hence, they began the project at the top of Union Juarez.

Perez Saldaña said the studies had been conducted to generate more food business and wealth in that area of the state. He said producers could increase the value of their productions if they bet on the vocation of the land, global supply and demand.

Currently the Hass avocado is only marketed and produced in 28 states, and 85% of the production comes from Michoacan, the market leader. Hass avocados are a hybrid variety of Mexico and Guatemala.

This food product, said Perez Saldaña, which originated in Cacahoatán, accounts for more than 80 percent of the US market. Thus, it would be a great opportunity to export the harvest from Chiapas to various American cities.
