German fruit growers counting on rising strawberry prices

Strawberries from Germany could be significantly more expensive this year due to the introduction of the statutory minimum wage, reports the German website extremnews.com. The German newspaper 'Bild' has reported that picking the berries will be about 30% more expensive. Jens Stechmann, President of the 'Bundesausschuss Obst und Gemüse' (Federal Committee for fruits and vegetables), spoke out about this.

Stechmann told the newspaper 'Bild': "I am very worried about the future of the German fruit sector. It is necessary that the food sector clearly chooses German products." Joachim Rukwied, President of the 'Deutsche Bauernverband' (German Farmers Association), has warned that the cultivation of some fruit in Germany, such as strawberries, will soon struggle for payment.
