Spain: Very irregular cauliflower campaign

Up until last week, cauliflower prices have been high on the European markets due to production shortages in major producing countries caused by low temperatures and unfavourable weather conditions. Consumer prices have stood above 2.16 Euro/kilo in the case of Germany.

Now the situation has completely reversed, with rising temperatures accompanied by strong winds which have accelerated the cauliflower pellet formation process. This information was confirmed by growers in Murcia, where auction prices are falling.

Good volumes from Italy and French Brittany have reached the market, driving prices down below the desired levels.

The weather will be a key factor to determine what will happen in the coming weeks. "The days will become longer, but if temperatures become colder, as it is the case today, the cycles can slow down again, bringing harvest volumes back to normal levels. It is still a very irregular campaign in this regard," explains a cauliflower producer to FreshPlaza.
