Spain still facing relatively no competition
Courgette prices down by over 50% in a week
Courgette prices have dropped by 50% in just a week, from €2.10 per kilo down to just over € 1.00/kilo right now for the fine green, the most demanded variety.
Thick green courgette prices have also dropped by 1 Euro compared to a week earlier, from an average of € 1.87 per kilo down to 86 cents right now.
For now, despite the fact that Almeria's plantations do perhaps not enjoy sufficient sunshine, night temperatures are milder, which has helped speed up plant productivity.
The weather forecast points to a gradual increase in temperatures in the coming weeks, so that production will increase and prices will surely continue their downward trend.
At the moment, even though prices continue to fall, Spain can still take advantage of Italy's shortages; a market where courgette prices are still high, above the 2.50 Euro per kilo, since producers are still affected by the impact of floods. Furthermore, Morocco continues to suffer from storms and snow, which have brought production to a halt.
