Italy: Quality of potato stocks rapidly decreasing

FreshPlaza talked to Domenico Citterio, owner of an import/export company from Verona, regarding the news coming from the Netherlands concerning the rapid decay of potato stocks.

"It is very difficult to predict how the situation will evolve in the next few weeks. Quality is decreasing faster than usual and more so as spring draws nearer. We can therefore expect demand for new potatoes to be early."

"However, due to the reduction in production areas and the weather it is unlikely to end in a good production. The same seems to have happened also in Majorca."

"At the same time, cold temperatures hit Israel and the eastern Mediterranean, especially Greece, Turkey and Cyprus, so we don't expect these countries to arrive on the market any time soon. There might therefore be a gap on the market in April/May/June. We will have to wait and see."
