US (WA): Pear market steady, additional imports to arrive this month
Pear supplies out of Washington are down to D'Anjou and Bosc varieties, and demand and prices are steady. Supplies out of Chile are arriving on the East Coast, and greater supplies from Argentina are expected later this month.
“We're expecting our first arrivals from Argentina at the end of the month,” said Addie Pobst of Viva Tierra Organic. “There are no Bartletts out of Washington right now, so there's some excitement for the imports coming up.”
On February 13, prices for an 18-kilogram container of size 70 Bartlett pears from Chile were between $30.00 and $32.00 out of the Philadelphia port of entry. Prices for a container of smaller fruit, size 100 and smaller, were between $20.00 and $28.00. Out of the Yakima Valley, a carton of D'Anjou 70s went for between $22.00 and $26.00, and prices for a carton of Bosc 70s were between $20.00 and $26.00
