95% of the Peruvian Hass avocado is exported

Peru: Prohass to increase avocado consumption in domestic market

The Association of Hass Avocado Producers of Peru (Prohass) seeks to increase the consumption of Hass avocados in the domestic market by carrying out an awareness campaign, stated Arturo Medina Castro, CEO of Prohass.

Currently, the per capita consumption of Hass avocado in Peru is low compared to other countries as it amounts to about three kilos per year, so it estimates that there is an interesting opportunity in the domestic market.

"We are reviewing the issue of increasing domestic consumption, we want to make a more aggressive promotion this season, but we still don't know how much budget can be allocated for this purpose or what direction we are going to take," he said.

"We (Prohass) have a very measured, austere promotion. Last year we invested $100,000 dollars in promotion and tasting topics, previously we invested $300,000 in panels and billboards," he said.

Arturo Medina said that if the promotion was to have a good result it would need to be accompanied by an adequate supply of fruit and that the product should have a very good quality. "What happens is that we export 95% of the Peruvian Hass avocado production volume," he said.

Avocado World Congress
The representative of Prohass also spoke about the realization of the World Avocado Congress, which will be held from September 13 to September 18 at the Westin Hotel in Lima, and said they expected an attendance of 1,500 people.

He said that the event would focus on the technical and commercial issues and that there would be exhibitions related to nutritional issues because there have been several scientific studies in recent years that recommend eating avocado.
