US: Specialty citrus season in full swing

Now is the time of year when many of Sunkist's specialty citrus varieties are in peak production. Many of the varieties are available through winter and into spring.

With good volumes and excellent taste, Moro oranges are here through April. They have a maroon interior with a taste profile that has hints of berry. They're easy to peel, which makes them a good snacking option.

There are also good supplies of Cara Cara navel oranges, which are available all the way into May. They are navel oranges with a sweeter kick and a seedless pink interior. Also available into May are pummelos, which are a large citrus variety with a thick skin. They are similar to grapefruit but are less acidic.

Oro Blanco Sweeties wrap up a little earlier, in March. Early varieties have green exteriors, but the skin of this grapefruit cousin turns golden yellow toward the later parts of the season. Another take on the grapefruit, the Minneola tangelo, is available through April. The cross between a grapefruit and tangerine is larger than most mandarins and has a red-orange exterior.

All varieties are grown in California and Arizona and are sold domestically and for export.
