Cabbage market hits new low

The cabbage market is facing heavy weather, according to grower Christof Callewaert, located near Roeselare. He indicates there were few upswings this season. "The second week of January, there was a brief revival, and the price bounced back a bit. But that's over already. It's not at all spectacular now."

He notes that the weather is perfect for the consumption of cabbage. "But unfortunately the price doesn't match that. Two weeks ago, it was still a bit more than thirty cents, but early this week it was around 20 cents. The prices weren't exactly extreme, but still a bit better than now." The grower has suffered big losses this year, volume-wise. "First we had the hail, then the rain, and on top of that a bacterial disease. This caused a lot of damage, and I lost about 40% of the harvest. We have a lot in storage now, but part of that could also be lost."

He thinks the prices aren't likely to go up in the near future. "Perhaps it's already too late if it starts to freeze now, there's a lot still in stock everywhere. I've also got about three months' worth in storage. Let's hope the prices will still bounce back this season."
