more and more Dutch growers join Belgian auctions

Belgian cucumber acreage up significantly

The acreages for greenhouse vegetables in Belgium have again increased. The Dutch growers who supply to the Belgian auctions, are also included in this. A marked tendency in recent years is that more and more Dutch growers are joining Belgian auctions.

Tomatoes
Benny Cuypers says that data regarding acreages is known, but no exact figures yet. "It's clear that there is little change in loose tomatoes. The vine tomato acreage on the other hand, has decreased somewhat. In tomato specialities, an increase is noticeable. Last year, the increase in specialities was enormous, about 50%. Now, it's a bit less."

Other remarkable developments are noticeable in bell peppers and cucumbers. "The increase is particularly significant in cucumbers. We're not talking about a few percent, but around 20%. This is mainly related to the fact that more Dutch are members of the Belgian auctions. If they supply in Belgium, their acreage is also included in the calculations. With eggplants, little has changed compared to last year."
