Market concerns Southern hemisphere pears

The pear harvest has begun in the Southern hemisphere, notably in Argentina and South Africa, where it began a few days early due to high temperatures in September.

Harvest appears good with a potential to remain within the five year average in South Africa, Argentina and even Chile, with levels slightly higher than last year when South American production was affected by the cold. The increase could reach +9%/2013 in Argentina, +3 to 4% in Chile and South Africa.

Whilst potential is good, finding outlets could be the worry; exports to the European market had already decreased last year (-15%/2013) as well as to Russia (-18%/2013). Operators worry about outlets, devaluation of currencies in primary destinations (notably the rouble and the dollar), and the large stocks stored in Europe and the USA leading to heavy loss in the sector.
