Protests against imports
Honduras: Onion producers to block highways
Onion producers nationwide in Honduras announced on Thursday they would be blocking the main roads in protest because they are affected by the imports of this product.
In response, the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), Jacobo Paz, said the small producers were exaggerating.
In that sense, both producers and the minister held a meeting to discuss the issue.
Paz said producers were told that the central government couldn't deny import licenses when the person requesting the license had all the necessary documents in order.
He also clarified that they had no legal basis to ban permits, so they could be sued for the abuse of authority and sent to jail if they did so.
The officer said the solution to the problem was to find an opening in the domestic market for the producers.
He stressed that there were already two supermarket chains committed to signing a contract with the producers of onions to buy part of their production.
